Movement

Movement
Definition

Movement is when an object is changing position in the frame.
Movement can occur when the camera is tracking an object - panning.
Motion blur is when an object is streaking across the screen/ frame.
Freeze frame is when an object is moving but there is no blur - capture it mid-action.

To capture movement, you would have to manipulate the shutter speed to achieve the type of image you would like.
To capture motion blur, you would want a long/ slow shutter speed (1" and above) so more movement can occur in the frame and give a more blurred affect.

Ersnt Haas

I like this photo by Ernst Haas because it clearly demonstrates motion blur by the commuters going down to the train station. Additionally, I like how the clothes in the image are very vibrant and stand out, this causes the movement of the people more visuals because the bold colours are more visible in the image. This could represent how the world is a busy place and everyone in consently moving from one place to the other and no one hardly ever stops to see what is around them. Also, this could represent how when you get older the less you notice becusss you are moving around more trying to get from one place to the next.

I like this photo because the background of the photo is sharp which causes the motion blur from the people to be even more noticeable - creating a stong contrast. This could imply how the world is around for a long time and stays standing there still when humans come and go pass quickly and do not get to stay in one place for too long. Also, I like how the movement coming from the people is not too blurry making it seem like smudges on the photo, instead, Haas has set the camera for a slightly quicker shutter speed so we are still able to see the figures of the person walking.

This photo demonstrates a different type of motion blur to the other images because in this photo, it almost seems like the people are fading out of the picture as if they are fading out of time. This could represent how humans and animals eventually fade away from the earth and time but objects which aren’t alive will be here long after we gone, displaying a deeper meaning of life and how we all end up moving on. Additionally, I like how come colours are bold attracting the eye towards it even more, especially the taxis in the background which adds extra detail and interest to the photo.

I like how Ernst Haas has used a train to demonstrate motion blur instead of people becusss it expands people’s idea of movement and shows more styles on how a photographer can take an image of movement. This image makes you feel as if you are travelling yourself and flying through the tunnel. Trains transport people from one place to another, helping people go on multiple journeys. This motion blur helps present how some people’s jorneys maybe quicker then others and the ones that are sometimes left behind have to wait for their own different journey. Additionally this could represent how complete strangers can sometimes share the same journey/ path because strangers for a split moment in time share something in common when they get in the same train as each other.

I like this photo because I have used a model and got her to stand still while the other people around were moving to get a strange but cool effect in the photo. In this photo I tried to attempt motion blur and freeze frame in this picture. I attempted motion burr in the background with the people moving around and I attempted freeze frame with the model to create a strong contrast. This photo could represent how a single person can be in deep thought while the rest of the world is busy rushing by. Additionally, this could symbolise how the world is too busy rushing pass things and missing them instead of looking at the world around them, they are too busy at looking at where they are going/ where they want to be instead of where they are right now.

I tried to capture motion blur with the fountain which caused a satisfying effect with the water. By using a slower shutter speed has caused a ring around the fountain from where the water has hit the pond. I like how the circle is very noticeable because it could represent a deeper meaning of the circle of life. Additionally, I like how the fountain is in the middle of the photo making it the main attention, and how the forest scene surrounds it emphasising the focus on the fountain. I like how peaceful this looks and it all seems undisturbed.

I like both of these photos because they both clearly demonstrate different style of movements. I found capturing motion blur was the easiest way of displaying movement because the shutter speed was open for longer and allowing the object to move across the screen.

Images that require improvement

This photo is too exposed and has caused it to come out white with a few figures appearing through. To prevent this from happening more throughout the photoshoot I had to keep changing/ manipulating my camera settings to get better quality of photos next time. By having this photo come out over exposed it has taught me that I need to look more carefully at my camera settings to achieve the photos I wish.

AO3

My idea to photograph movement was by taking pictures of my friends in Harlow by making them move around or stand still and capture the background moving. This helped me achieve movement by having people moving across the frame leaving a blurred figure. Also, I took more photos in my own time to help expand the amount of photos I have and use different genres of movement (such as freeze frame).

My photos of the model was inspired by Ernst Haas by using people in a public space to create movement (motion blur). However, I wanted to put my own style on the photo by trying to incorporate freeze frame in the photo by asking the model to stand still while the model stood still when taking the photo.

AO2

I used my Canon 600D camera with my EPS 18-55 Canon lens. However, I did not have a tripod on me which made it difficult for me to capture a clean image with the blur more effective. If I was going to go out and do this again, I would make sure that I have a tripod on me so I can get a cleaner background and the actual object moving look more blur creating a contrast. I had my ISO settings to 400 because we were under shade while taking some photos and it was a cloudy day, therefore I needed a higher ISO. I needed a longer shutter speed so i could capture the movement when the objects are moving across the screen, so I set it to 1/2. I could not allow the shutter speed to be open for longer was because I didn't have a tripod, therefore, I couldn't get a nice clean image due to my hands shaking. I had my f-stop low because I wanted less light let into the photo because the shutter speed was open for longer, therefore, I set it to 2.8. By doing this, I no longer got the overly exposed photo like I did before because I allowed less light to get in.

Manipulating my images

AO1

The artist I researched was Ernst Haas, who helped me create many ideas for my composition for movement. In most of his images he uses people to create motion blur when the rest of the background is still, as if time is frozen by everything is still moving. I tried to use this same style in and around Harlow with multiple people to try and create the same affect. However, due to not having a tripod I could get the clean background like it is in Ernst Haas.

AO4

These photos are personal to me because I have used one of my friends a model and I wanted to represent how sometimes she can go into deep thought when the world is passing her by. I wanted to create the illusion that my friend was standing still while the rest of the world carries on around her. However, my friend came out slightly blurry due to me not having a tripod. I wanted to create this unique effect because it would of made my photos stand out even more.

I like how my movement photos came out in photoshop because I feel that the black and white helps makes the movement more noticeable because there are less colours to distract from the moving object. Additionally, the black and white makes the photo seem more peaceful and attractive to the eye. In the first photo of my friend, I like how the people moving has come out in a darker tone because it has made it more obvious/ stand out more to the lighter toned background. In my second photo, the water from the fountain it the lightest tone in the photo which has caused a nice contrast to the forest scene which is a lot darker making the water be the focus point of the image.

Form

Form

Definition:

  • A visual shape three dimensional shape which uses a lot of tone.
  • Form is a 3D shape, when shape is only 2D but apart from that they are fairly similar.
  • Tone is used in form to help exaggerate the darker and lighter tones to emphasise its form.

I chose these as my best photos because I liked how the cats are in different positions each time to give more variety. Additionally, I like these photos because I have managed to capture their different characteristics in each of the photos due to the different activity they are doing in each photo. These images represent form because it they have a bold structure and dominate the images. I like how there colours stand out and help add more variation and tone to there fur.

Images that require Improvement

I don't like these photos because the are under exposed and you cannot see the animal in the photo, therefore shows how my photos do not accurately represent tone or link to my artist research. I don't like the first photo because the light on the water is causing a reflection and it makes the picture look slightly blurry and out of focus. Additionally, the water was dirty, therefore, it makes the water look gritty and grainy which causes my photo too look displeasing. I don't like my second image because it is too dark and you cannot see much detail in the image. Additionally, you can't see the animal (which is the main focus of this image clearly) due to my settings not being correct on my camera.

AO3
I decided to record form by taking pictures of animals instead of people to help expand my idea of thinking and make my work stand out more. I chose to take pictures of my pets and use them as the main focus of the project because it was the easier for me to access and I could of spent longer to take pictures. However, I did go to a zoo for the day to help create more variety in my images.

The close up photo of the black and white cat links to my researcher artist Tom Flach because he takes a lot of pictures of animals close up to their face to make them the main focus and limit the amount of background behind them. I wanted to show that I understood how Tom Flach works and how I can manipulate it slightly into my own style of photography. However, Tom Flach uses a plain background which I wouldn't be able to do without using photoshop, but I'm not going to change my background because I still want to keep my own style of photography in my photos.

I like the other image of the black and white cat because her black fur stands out to the grass. Furthermore, I had to manipulate my settings while taking this picture to get the exposer right because I was in natural lighting; by doing this, I managed to get a picture that makes my cat's coat shine a lot more.

AO2
I used a fast shutter speed to I could get a clear picture because if I used a slower one it would of been blurry due to the animals moving around a lot. Also, I had to use a lower ISO settings when I was outside compared to when I was inside due to the sun. Furthermore, when I was outside I had to keep manipulating my ISO settings when there was a bit of cloud cover.

Manipulating my Images

AO1
The photographer I decided to research was Tom Flach because he used animals instead of people for form, which helped me come up with ideas for my composition. He took pictures of animals faces up close which I took inspiration from and decided to use that idea and produce multiple images with my own twist on it.

AO4
My intensions for my photos was to demonstrate form through animals to help expand my way of thinking and taking my photos. I tried to explore different angles up close of the animal to help show different perspectives of the animal creating form. I chose to convert all of my pictures to black and white to make them stand out more by the form of the animal able to stand out better. Also, I used curves to help make the animal stand out compared to the background by making the background darker than the main image.

I like how my images turned out because the cats in each photo stands out from the background. Additionally, by converting all of my images to black and white it helps emphasis the features and add tone to make the form of the cat more obvious. However, some of the images have a busy background which causes the eye to be slightly distracted from the form of the cats, therefore to avoid this problem in the future I could blur out the background in photoshop or darken it even more so more attention is focused on the cats.

Tone

Tone

This refers to the lightness or darkness of something. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears.
Tones are created by the way light falls on a 3D object. The parts of the object on which the light is strongest are called highlights and the darker areas are called shadows. There will a range of tones in between the highlights and shadows.

Without tone Form does not exist, tone is therefore an important aspect in the visualisation of 3D objects.

Harsh lighting - the photo looks dark to create a foreboding photo, the image could look menacing.
Diffuse lighting - the photo looks lighter and more welcoming.

Example of Tone

I decided to analyse pictures in the same way......

This overall photo is in a dark tone which makes it appear foreboding. Additionally, this fits with the photo because it makes the male look more menacing and strong. However, this is not

Research Artist

I like how the flower stands out from the background by the contrast between the two. The background is a plain back when the flower is a delicate white with a lot of texture on it. Tone has been displayed on this flower by having a variety of zones throughout the whole flower - in the middle of the flower there is zone 1 when some parts of the outside of the flower is zone 9/10. I can use this in my own work by working with the lighting to try and get the different zones in my photo. However, I don't like this photo because it does not seem that interesting by the background being too plain therefore does not keep the attraction for too long.

I like how the colour of the flower is a strong contrast to the background of the photo. Furthermore, the background has a bit of texture to help make the photo seem more interesting and appealing to the human eye. The flower its self only displays a limited amount of zones from the higher end from the scale, but the background helps balancing it out by only displaying a limited amount of zone from the lower end (causing that strong contrast). However, the right side of the background does cause a bit of distraction from the main image because there is a lot of texture on the leaves and due to the leaves being a lighter tone.

I like how this flower has a lot of irregular pattern has caused the flower to look more sharp and harsh. The flower has a limited amount of tone due to only being one type of zone throughout, this makes it look more pleasing to the eye because they are more focused of the texture and pattern instead of the tone (causing it to seem more interesting). However, I don't like this because it does look slightly plain because there is not tone to help emphasise its features.

I like this flower because the way Imogen Cunningham has positioned the flower has made it look delicate/ elegant. Furthermore, the flower portrays a type of purity and innocence by the tone being soft and subtle. The flower and the background are contrasting each other by Imogen Cunningham using the higher zones for the flower and lower zones for the background. Additionally, I like how the background is plain because it causes the flower to stand out even further. The centre of the flower has texture when the other surrounding part of the flower is smooth which helps draw more attention to the flower. However, the lack of texture from the flower does cause it to be slightly boring because there are no extra features to draw attention.

Overall, I could use Imogen Cunningham style in my own work by using similar techniques she
uses. Cunningham takes pictures from an up close angle with parts of the flower cropped out to make
it look more interesting. Personally, I am more interesting in taking pictures of nature, therefore I can
explore Imogen Cunningham's way of taking photos and use similar techniques for my own. By
adding this, it will make my photos seem more interesting.

Image Bank

I decided to use these as my image bank because it has a mixture of different type of nature exploring
tone. This image banks helps me expand my idea of thinking about tone by taking pictures of
landscape alongside flowers to help build up my contact sheets further.

I like this photo because the background is nearly blacked out creating the whole focus to be on the
flower. Also, I like how there is a strong contrast between the flower and the background therefore
when I later take this photo into photoshop I will be able to show a wide range of tone.

I like this photo because the flower is in the centre of the photo allowing it to fill the frame nicely.
Also, the petals have creates a lot of shadowy areas in the flower which creates more tone which I can
later emphasise in photoshop by converting the image into black and white.

I like how these chess pieces are slightly see through, therefore shows a lot of tone because the light
is able to shine through a lot and reflect outwards and leaving the sides to be a darker shade. I can use
this photo and experiment in photoshop to see if i can bring out the tone slightly more.

I like this photo because it seem simplistic but still does show off some tone by the lights in the studio
creating a shadow. To present tone better in this image I will take this into photoshop later and bring
out the shadows in the image even more.

I like this photo because it is very interesting because it is creepy like and it creates a foreboding
sensation. Also, I like how the black background helps emphasise the tone in the image because more
of the light is focused on the doll. The reflection on the table could create interesting tone when I
manipulate it in photoshop and experiment with the different techniques.

I chose these as my best images because I liked how they all vary from each other, and how they are
all different from each other. My last two images are studio pictures, which allowed me to explore a
different way of taking pictures. However, I could not take pictures of nature as easily, therefore, I
had to use the resources around to help me produce these pictures. Both of my studio photos do stand
out because they have a plain background which gives more emphasise on the main object in the
photo. Additionally, I like my first two photos because I managed to take the image of the flower
from a closer up angle (like Imogen Cunningham).

Images that require improvement

I don't like these images because they do not demonstrate tone and there is not a main focus in the
image. I don't like my first image because there is not a clear focus on what the image is.
Additionally, the image is busy which makes it look displeasing to the eye and the colours in the
photo are plain which makes my photo look boring. I don't like my second photograph because the
exposure is too low, therefore it made the image very dark. This photo was taken in a studio (which
was my first time) and I didn't know how the settings were meant to be, therefore, I got an
underexposed photo.

AO3

I decided to record tone by taking photos around Harlow and in the studio. I chose to take pictures of
a variety of different things that could help represent tone when i change it into black and white later
in photoshop. My research artist was Imogen Cunningham, she helped come up with ideas on how to
take photos of flowers close up and then later manipulate them in photoshop to demonstrate tone.

The image of the white flower creates tone because there is a strong contrast between the dark
background and the light flower. This links to my artist researcher, Imogen Cunningham, because I
have a closer up picture of a flower and some parts have been cut off.

AO2

I used my Canon 600D to take these photos and I had to use different settings for each photo due to
moving to different areas with different exposure of light. My shutter speed was 1/200, therefore I
had to keep adjusting my iso and aperture to depending how much light was around.

When I was in the studio I had to use different equipment to help me produce these photos. To create
the eerie doll photo I had use a dark set up. I used a black sheet to have a pain background so more
focus and emphasise was on the doll. Also, I used a snoot to have a focused light on the doll and the
rest of the photo to be dark, to make the light more intense, I turned off the main studio lights so i had
only one source.

Manipulating my images

AO1
The artist I researched was Imogen Cunningham. She helped me produce multiple ideas for my
composition, by expanding the way I think and take pictures. She takes close up pictures of flowers
and I decided to do something similar to show how i understood her work. I went around Harlow and
tried to find objects that could represent tone. Imogen Cunningham mainly takes pictures of flowers
and due to the time of year, I struggled to find bloomed flowers, therefore,  I had to use different
objects to take pictures of, to present tone.

AO4
My intensions for my photography was to create tone in a similar way that Imogen Cunningham does
but with my own twist and style on it. I tried to do this to represent the tones from Ansel Adams zone
system. Additionally, I converted all of my images into black and white to help emphasise the
different tones in my pictures and to help link it to Imogen Cunningham further.

Images

I like how my edited photos ended up because they all show tone in different ways. Additionally, I
like how all of my photos are different from each other to show more variety in which tone could be
displayed. By changing my images into black and white helped me improve my images because I was
able to easily represent tone in them and it linked to my artist researcher, Imogen Cunningham.
