Movement

Movement
Definition

Movement is when an object is changing position in the frame.
Movement can occur when the camera is tracking an object - panning.
Motion blur is when an object is streaking across the screen/ frame.
Freeze frame is when an object is moving but there is no blur - capture it mid-action.

To capture movement, you would have to manipulate the shutter speed to achieve the type of image you would like.
To capture motion blur, you would want a long/ slow shutter speed (1" and above) so more movement can occur in the frame and give a more blurred affect.

Ersnt Haas

I like this photo by Ernst Haas because it clearly demonstrates motion blur by the commuters going down to the train station. Additionally, I like how the clothes in the image are very vibrant and stand out, this causes the movement of the people more visuals because the bold colours are more visible in the image. This could represent how the world is a busy place and everyone in consently moving from one place to the other and no one hardly ever stops to see what is around them. Also, this could represent how when you get older the less you notice becusss you are moving around more trying to get from one place to the next.

I like this photo because the background of the photo is sharp which causes the motion blur from the people to be even more noticeable - creating a stong contrast. This could imply how the world is around for a long time and stays standing there still when humans come and go pass quickly and do not get to stay in one place for too long. Also, I like how the movement coming from the people is not too blurry making it seem like smudges on the photo, instead, Haas has set the camera for a slightly quicker shutter speed so we are still able to see the figures of the person walking.

This photo demonstrates a different type of motion blur to the other images because in this photo, it almost seems like the people are fading out of the picture as if they are fading out of time. This could represent how humans and animals eventually fade away from the earth and time but objects which aren’t alive will be here long after we gone, displaying a deeper meaning of life and how we all end up moving on. Additionally, I like how come colours are bold attracting the eye towards it even more, especially the taxis in the background which adds extra detail and interest to the photo.

I like how Ernst Haas has used a train to demonstrate motion blur instead of people becusss it expands people’s idea of movement and shows more styles on how a photographer can take an image of movement. This image makes you feel as if you are travelling yourself and flying through the tunnel. Trains transport people from one place to another, helping people go on multiple journeys. This motion blur helps present how some people’s jorneys maybe quicker then others and the ones that are sometimes left behind have to wait for their own different journey. Additionally this could represent how complete strangers can sometimes share the same journey/ path because strangers for a split moment in time share something in common when they get in the same train as each other.

I like this photo because I have used a model and got her to stand still while the other people around were moving to get a strange but cool effect in the photo. In this photo I tried to attempt motion blur and freeze frame in this picture. I attempted motion burr in the background with the people moving around and I attempted freeze frame with the model to create a strong contrast. This photo could represent how a single person can be in deep thought while the rest of the world is busy rushing by. Additionally, this could symbolise how the world is too busy rushing pass things and missing them instead of looking at the world around them, they are too busy at looking at where they are going/ where they want to be instead of where they are right now.

I tried to capture motion blur with the fountain which caused a satisfying effect with the water. By using a slower shutter speed has caused a ring around the fountain from where the water has hit the pond. I like how the circle is very noticeable because it could represent a deeper meaning of the circle of life. Additionally, I like how the fountain is in the middle of the photo making it the main attention, and how the forest scene surrounds it emphasising the focus on the fountain. I like how peaceful this looks and it all seems undisturbed.

I like both of these photos because they both clearly demonstrate different style of movements. I found capturing motion blur was the easiest way of displaying movement because the shutter speed was open for longer and allowing the object to move across the screen.

Images that require improvement

This photo is too exposed and has caused it to come out white with a few figures appearing through. To prevent this from happening more throughout the photoshoot I had to keep changing/ manipulating my camera settings to get better quality of photos next time. By having this photo come out over exposed it has taught me that I need to look more carefully at my camera settings to achieve the photos I wish.

AO3

My idea to photograph movement was by taking pictures of my friends in Harlow by making them move around or stand still and capture the background moving. This helped me achieve movement by having people moving across the frame leaving a blurred figure. Also, I took more photos in my own time to help expand the amount of photos I have and use different genres of movement (such as freeze frame).

My photos of the model was inspired by Ernst Haas by using people in a public space to create movement (motion blur). However, I wanted to put my own style on the photo by trying to incorporate freeze frame in the photo by asking the model to stand still while the model stood still when taking the photo.

AO2

I used my Canon 600D camera with my EPS 18-55 Canon lens. However, I did not have a tripod on me which made it difficult for me to capture a clean image with the blur more effective. If I was going to go out and do this again, I would make sure that I have a tripod on me so I can get a cleaner background and the actual object moving look more blur creating a contrast. I had my ISO settings to 400 because we were under shade while taking some photos and it was a cloudy day, therefore I needed a higher ISO. I needed a longer shutter speed so i could capture the movement when the objects are moving across the screen, so I set it to 1/2. I could not allow the shutter speed to be open for longer was because I didn't have a tripod, therefore, I couldn't get a nice clean image due to my hands shaking. I had my f-stop low because I wanted less light let into the photo because the shutter speed was open for longer, therefore, I set it to 2.8. By doing this, I no longer got the overly exposed photo like I did before because I allowed less light to get in.

Manipulating my images

AO1

The artist I researched was Ernst Haas, who helped me create many ideas for my composition for movement. In most of his images he uses people to create motion blur when the rest of the background is still, as if time is frozen by everything is still moving. I tried to use this same style in and around Harlow with multiple people to try and create the same affect. However, due to not having a tripod I could get the clean background like it is in Ernst Haas.

AO4

These photos are personal to me because I have used one of my friends a model and I wanted to represent how sometimes she can go into deep thought when the world is passing her by. I wanted to create the illusion that my friend was standing still while the rest of the world carries on around her. However, my friend came out slightly blurry due to me not having a tripod. I wanted to create this unique effect because it would of made my photos stand out even more.

I like how my movement photos came out in photoshop because I feel that the black and white helps makes the movement more noticeable because there are less colours to distract from the moving object. Additionally, the black and white makes the photo seem more peaceful and attractive to the eye. In the first photo of my friend, I like how the people moving has come out in a darker tone because it has made it more obvious/ stand out more to the lighter toned background. In my second photo, the water from the fountain it the lightest tone in the photo which has caused a nice contrast to the forest scene which is a lot darker making the water be the focus point of the image.
