Portraiture Photography

Portraiture

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. the intent is to display the likeness, personality and even the mood of the person.

I chose these photos because they both show different types of emotion. the photo on the left creates a calming and peaceful atmosphere. Also, this photo is not too close up, therefore the background causes the photo to seem more gentle. The photo on the right has a sad and upsetting emotion with the camera zoomed in close

This photo was taken by Yousuf Karsh during the war, he tried to create a menacing photo of Winston Churchill to make the leader of England seem more powerful and strong. To create this photo they took aways his cigar which caused him to get annoyed and they quickly took the photo.

This is a photo of transgender woman names Amanda Lepore who presents the idea of the ideal 'pretty' woman: thin, tall, pale, big bright red lips - she represents a Marilyn Monroe ideology. She portrays a empowering, confident and glamours look in her photos.

Research Artist:

Annie Leibovits

I have chosen this photographer because i like how she has made the people in the image look empowering by simple positioning and looking into the camera is a certain way. the photos she takes of the celebrities are glamours and clean - the photos do not have any shape ages, everything is smooth.

Thomas Ruff

I have decided to research Thomas Ruff because his type or portrait photos represent a dead pan as if the model is dead inside or motionless. This helps the viewer look at the more detailed parts of the persons face instead of the expresssion. Additionally, these photos create a sense of unknowning because you do not know how the model feels.

David Lachapelle

David Lachapple creates a fun and excited appearance to portraiture by having bold and exciting colours running throughout the image. Furthermore, most of his photos demonstrate the classical American lifestyle or have American themed photos. I like his photos becusss his are not too focused on the face which causes an interesting appearance because there is always something else going on in the photo.

Alec Sloth

Alec Sloth’s photos are a lot more plain compared to the other artists by using muted colours. Additionally, his photos seem more realistic for an ordinary persons lifestyle. I like his photos because his ideas seem simplistic but are still very effective. Also, I like how each photo seems simple but they both have a deeper meaning behind it. For example, the woman holding a picture frame is of when she saw an angle and took a picture of it.

Best Images

I like this photo because it is a slight mix of portraiture and landscape. I like how the model is looking into the distance because it makes her seem as if she's lost in thought and doesn't notice that she's having her photo taken - making it seem more natural. Additionally, I like how the forest scene in the background adds extra texture/ pattern to make the background seem more interesting, causing the overall photo to seem more appealing. The photograph seems to have a peaceful atmosphere to it due to the nature and muted colours from the background, this could represent how and what the model is thinking about.

I like this photo because the way the model is standing creates the photo seem very empowered and bold. Also, I like how the sun in the background is shining through the trees to add slightly more texture and make the background more interesting. This could represent how the models inner self is finally shinning through like how the sun is shining through the trees. Additionally, I like how the model doesn't get swallowed into the background and still stands out by wearing black, bold colours which contrast the forest background. I like how I've positioned the model slightly of centre because it allows the eye to be dragged through the image and into the background after looking at the model.

I like this photo because it shows that I clearly understood how Thomas Ruff works and incorporate it into my own style. Additionally, I like how the model is wearing dark clothes to match the dark background because it adds a sense of mystery and the dead pan face helps emphasise a sense of unknown because it seems as if something bad has happened. This could suggest how the model is in deep thought which she has become lost in.

I like this photo because it furthers my understanding of Thomas Ruff and how I can incorporate his work into my own style. Additionally, I like how the model is standing because it makes it seem like I have caught him off guard and have caught him in a deep thought. I could use this style of portraiture in my composition by taking pictures of models being in deep thought and staring off into the distance, in their own little world.

Images that require improvement

I don't like these photos because they are both underexposed and you can see no definition in the face. This is due to not having the correct settings while I was in the studio. To help prevent this in the future, I can use the light meter while in the studio so I can get the correct settings for my camera straight away and avoid getting any over or under exposed images.

AO3
I wanted to record portraiture by using my friends as models and using the studio and natural settings to take photos in. I wanted to use multiple different settings because I wanted to show how I can expand my thinking of taking photos and use different techniques in contrasting settings. Therefore, this will help push me further and help me produce better quality photos with more interesting qualities in them. I have demonstrated this by doing a forest and studio shoot. These shoots was inspired by different artist for multiple reasons. The artists I was inspired by was Thomas Ruff, Annie Leibovits and Alec Sloth. I was inspired by Thomas Ruff deadpan face composition and I decided to use this technique in the studio to help me experiment with different ways on how to take portraiture shots. I was inspired by Annie Leiboits because I likes how she took pictures of people and celebrities and brought out an elegant side to them and I wanted to experiment with her way of taking photos and try and portray an elegant side to my friends. Also, I was inspired by Alec Sloth because he takes pictures in unusual settings and makes the image seem more interesting through his backgrounds as well, I decided I wanted to do something similar and I took a portraiture shoot in the woods with one of my friends.

A02
For both shoots I used my Canon 600D with my shutter speed set to 1/125. For my studio shoot my ISO was set to 200 and my aperture was set to F11 due to the multiple lights I was using and they were on a flash. To get the right settings in the studio, I used a light metre to tell me which were the best settings to get the correct exposure in my images. When I did my forest shoot I set my ISO to 400 due to cloud cover and being under trees and I had my aperture set to F5 to allow extra light in.

Manipulating photos

AO1
I researched multiple artists for portraiture to help me come up with different ideas for my composition. I used all of the ideas in my own work to help create a variety of photos all exploring the same theme. In some of my photos I did a deadpan shoot similar to Thomas Ruff, therefore using his idea and incorporating it into my own. However, other artists I researched, such as Alec Sloth, I could not get a similar results to because I wasn't able to access the same settings as they did. Therefore, I had to use the resources near me to help demonstrate that I understood Alec Sloth's way of work.

AO4
My intentions for my images was to show the elegance in the models faces and capture them as if they are deep in thought. To try and achieve this, I asked them to pick something off in the distance and stare at it and I took multiple photos of them from different angles.

I like these photos because I have demonstrated that I understand how each of the artists that I've looked at and incorporated it into my own style. I like how I have slightly darkened the background to help emphasise the features of the person's face, making it the key feature and try to highlight the details. To develop this further, I could convert some of my photos into black and white, which would allow my to experiment with different techniques on how to produce a portraiture photo.
